Across the globe, heavy competition exists among the leading experts in the technological field as new ideas are being born, created and innovated daily. With such a booming industry projected to expand nationally by 3% in the next ten years (according to careerinfo.net), it comes as no surprise that finding talent to fill jobs within the industry is quite challenging. This is especially true in an area such as New York, where everyone is seeking to climb the career ladder while companies are searching for their next Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. Becoming an IT Recruiter – What Does It Take?
To become a master IT recruiter, it is required that you have the skillset determined by the company. Most often this can include:
- Obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems or a degree in a similar field.
- One to three years of previous experience in information technology.
It’s important to note that, due to essentially every modern business needing IT support, many are recruited by general Human Resource Recruiters, even when it isn’t ideal. According to study.com, the projected job growth from 2014 to 2024 is 5% for all human resource specialists, slightly higher than that of the IT industry, and the median salary as of May 2015 was $58,350. Anywhere from small to large companies and businesses use IT recruiters to hire professionals for all areas of technology.
Challenges in the Field
HR Recruiters in the IT Industry are met with an unusual challenge in their field: They must often prove their own IT expertise to the companies they serve, so companies see them as capable of scoping out the best in the field. In addition, they are expected to know each company’s policies and procedures, as well as any governmental guidelines and laws that must be followed by the applicants. All of this means that a recruiter in the IT industry is often asked to go above and beyond the lengths of a typical recruiter, often having additional education and training, as well as having access to referrals and networks who are successful in the field. Often, a recruiter working in IT may assist in the development of strategies and improvements to the overall hiring process at a particular company. Simply put, as study.com describes, IT recruiters are the link between the company who is hiring, and the job applicant.
The Bottom Line
According to the glassdoor, the national average median salary as reported for July 2016 for IT recruiters was $43,312, with New York City boasting a higher average of salary of $48,575. Synechron, however, a company of technical recruiters based out of New York City, rewards employees with a reported salary of $67,282 yearly. Glassdoor also provides a look at other city dwellers in the field earning higher than average, as a full-time, tech recruiter in a public company equipped with 10,000 + employees makes a salary of $95,000 per year, not including the additional pay of a $15k cash bonus, $20k stock bonus, with only 3 to 4 years of experience. Another popular outlier, Facebook, pays its recruiters about $108,549 to find the best IT talent available.
Overall, modern companies must have a strong IT department to carry out many of their standard, every day functions and operations, and they must have talented individuals working behind the scenes in order to stay competitive in today’s market. In an area such as New York, the stakes become even higher, and the demand for those with expertise is only expanding.
